ABOUT CHARLES COUNTY, MD

Charles County, one of the original counties of the province, was created by an Order in the Council of 1658. Known as a gateway to Maryland and a backyard to the nation’s capital, it is bordered to the north by Prince George's County, the east and southeast by the Patuxent River and St. Mary's County, and the south and southwest by the Potomac River. The county was named for Charles Calvert, son and heir of Cecilius Calvert, Second Lord Baltimore.

 

Charles County welcomes travelers to explore its rich history and heritage. Savor freshly caught seafood at an waterfront eateries or try outdoor adventures on walking trails or kayaking through the Ghost Fleet of Mallows Bay at Mallow Bay - Potomac River National Marine Sanctuary. Discover antiques and unique finds in quaint stores peppered throughout the county.
